Alanis Morissette
Jagged Little Pill Acoustic
(Maverick)
Ten years on, and what have we learned?
Well, apparently Alanis Morissette has learned that when you run out of ideas and have failed to attain the degree of success that propelled you into the spotlight, you can, nay, you must go home again.
So, the Canadian singer-songwriter returns to what kicked it all off for her a decade ago, Jagged Little Pill.
The twist? It's a more mature, acoustic retelling of the exact same songs, the exact same album.
The point? Who knows.
What appealed to people -- and the industry -- originally was the idea of an young woman speaking her mind with an energy and anger that was, to those only familiar with mainstream female musicians, unheard of.
All of that energy, all of that anger, all of that middle America prom queen rage has been removed from the songs, rendering them as impotent and indulgent as they always have been at their very core.
Even Hand In My Pocket, which won over with its upbeat charm, is a dull, lifeless dirge strummed with a defeating melancholy.
And lyrically, well in a post-Sex and the City society, no one can be expected to find it all that shocking to hear a woman say the things Morissette does.
So, once more, what have we learned?
Without it's jagged edges, Morissette's name-maker is just a bitter little pill that's very tough to swallow.
