Morissey miffed at Canada
By JASON MacNEIL - Special to Sun Media

British singer Morrissey snubbed Canada on his recent tour in support of his studio effort Ringleader Of The Tormentors due to the Canadian government's stance on the seal hunt.

Now, it appears that not one, not two, but three requests to have the performer appear on Canadian soil this summer have been turned down.

According to a statement by the artist on True To You (true-to-you.net), an authoritative fan site often used by the singer, Morrissey was asked to appear in Montreal in late June as part of a television special honouring Buffy Sainte-Marie and her 50 years of making music. The event was being hosted by the Montreal Symphony.

Morrissey was also asked to perform at the Virgin Festival in Vancouver later this summer and Calgary's Fort Calgary June 21-22. But the singer has declined all three offers citing the "constitutionally sickening Canadian seal-kill."

"The horror of the Canadian seal-kill is untranslatable, and although I fully realize that highly concentrated evil exists in other countries -- Japan's dolphin slaughter, Iceland's newly-revived whaling, the cat-skinning trade in Switzerland, and China with just about every injustice imaginable -- there is something especially menacing about Canada's seal-kill," Morrissey said in the statement. "This Canadian government is happy to drag the global image of its own country down, and make it a place that people such as I couldn't bear to visit."
