Morrissey
Live at Earls Court
(Sanctuary/EMI)
Image-conscious as he is, he'll never admit it, but Morrissey, the most beloved celibate celebrity this side of Pope Benedict XVI, is finally comfortable within his own skin.
Comfortable enough, as this aural documentary of an evening of idol worship reveals, to revisit a past that has included some of the most irresistible pop music ever created.
"Yes," he deadpans to the adoring throng, "the past is a strange place."
Yet, Moz takes us back to the old house with the first song of this career overview, grabbing his followers firmly by the sans-testes with the words each has lived by: "I am the son and the heir of a shyness ..."
The self-pitying drama never lets up during a set that proves the best Morrissey solo material stands up just fine against The Smiths' catalogue. (A claim few composers can make.)
So all hail headmaster Morrissey. And rest assured, Steven, you are loved -- whether you like it or not.
