Black Holes and Revelations

For nearly a decade, people have been comparing these proggy Britrockers to a cross between Radiohead and Queen. This fourth album probably won't put an end to that -- but it might force people to add a few new names to that list.
Black Holes and Revelations is the trio's most expansive, ambitious and fully realized work, with 11 tracks that cover a broader musical spectrum than most bands do in their careers. You've got a few rockers that are almost U2ish in their grandeur and scale.
You've got some piano ballads that wouldn't be out of place on a Rufus Wainwright album. You've got futuristic spaghetti western and surf soundtracks sporting flamenco guitars, toreador horns and whammy-bar twang. You've even got fuzzy funk grinding and nue-metal guitar riffage. And yeah, you've got some cuts that sound a little like Thom Yorke doing Bohemian Rhapsody at karaoke night.
Maybe those aren't a revelation. But the rest of this incomparable album sure fits the bill.
