Bif's nerves naked
By MIKE BELL

Even the woman who loves herself today can still suffer from self-doubt.

As West Coast rock queen Bif Naked gets set to host tonight's Western Canadian Music Alliance awards show, the butterflies are starting to stir -- something you wouldn't expect from someone who seems the picture of confidence and cool.

"I'm excited and nervous," says Bif from her Vancouver home. "What if I trip and fall walking onto the stage? What if I say something wrong? What if I'm unfunny? What if I have acne? What if I'm sweating?

"There are so many things."

The main source of her stress -- as well as the excitement -- is the fact the Jack Singer seats will be filled with many people who've been a part of her life on one level or another for the past 15 years.

"It's like school assembly," she says of the predominantly industry crowd. "Over the years you wind up getting to know everybody. Canada's kind of a small country and it's fun to see the same faces -- it's like a big family reunion."

Onstage the reunion continues, as Calgary band The Stampeders will be inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame and will also perform ... oh, I'm guessing, Sweet City Woman?

Other performers include Doc Walker, Joel Kroeker, the Wailin' Jennys, Mocking Shadows and Bif, who will open the show with her hit I Love Myself Today.

Unfortunately, none of her babies will get a chance to show their stuff at the show.

None of the bands on her West Coast label Her Royal Majesty's Records are appearing at the awards, although they did get the opportunity to showcase earlier.

Todd Kerns, The Heck, The Vincent Black Shadow, The Flairs -- Bif sounds like a proud ma talking about the acts she's helping get out in the world.

"My eyes get wet thinking about it," she says. "Maybe it's the mother in me coming out, but I just really believe in these groups so much and I feel so much responsibility because they are entrusting themselves currently to me."

As for her own career, Bif just wrapped up her new studio album, which is set for a January release.

That's leaving her a lot of downtime for working out, sushi dinners with friends such as Calgary singer Jann Arden, and -- ahem -- discovering her femininity.

"This year I turned into a woman -- I couldn't be happier," Bif laughs.

"I finally hit puberty -- I think it was somewhere between my 33 and 34 birthday, where a light went on and I went, 'Oh, Sophia Loren! I've got it.

"So I've been embracing that a little bit more."

And for the first time in her life she's single.

For a woman who has admittedly been engaged six times ("They asked me," she says sheepishly by way of explanation), it's a big deal.

Then again, the way Bif talks wistfully about her friends who are settling down and having kids, it's doubtful that it will last.

"If you know anybody who wants to be a husband and is interested in procreating with a rock 'n' roll girl -- you let me know," she says with a laugh. "I'm kind of holding out for Henry Rollins, but ..."
