LOVE SONGS
Willie Nelson
(Sony)

You almost can't go wrong with Willie Nelson, but when he sings a love song it feels slightly unnatural.

His story is one of narrowly missed tragedy, and of all the great country singers, Nelson's easily the happiest-seeming. He covers the Beatles' Something, but also Wind Beneath My Wings. Gag.

Always on My Mind by Nelson is probably the best version, though Elvis's is crucial for comparison. And Willie's Unchained Melody is slightly flat when compared to, say, U2's.

Still, it's good stuff.

Put your guns away.

My point about Nelson and love being weird is backed up by the fact that these are almost all covers, his own heart a secret chamber not for you or I to shine flashlights into. The song Crazy is perhaps the true story.
