Stop the presses - the New Meanies are an indie band again!

Best to get that news out of the way. Every article in every publication to hype the band's new tour - landing Friday at the Sidetrack Cafe - will mention that the New Meanies and Virgin Music have "parted ways" after only one album. Inevitably one of the band members will claim they are "much happier now" and that the new album, Highways, is the "best yet."

Meanies new & improved
Winnipeg's New Meanies were always at their hard-scrabbling, jamming, neo-hippy best when they were an independent band, prior to signing a major label deal with Virgin Music Canada.

Sure, Virgin paid big bucks for the recording and marketing of the group's 1998 Three Seeds album -- but the end result, while yielding some tremendous new songs, was just a little too high-gloss for most Meanies fans.
