GET READY
New Order
(London-Warner)
After their longest break apart, and various side projects, the four members of this respected British electro-pop quartet have regrouped with their signature sound intact.
However, New Order's first album in eight years, in stores Tuesday, is a decidedly hit-and-miss 10-song collection.
Singer-guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, drummer Stephen Morris and keyboardist Gillian Gilbert are in a more mellow mood and Get Ready has fewer solid tunes than their last studio album, 1993's Republic, which spawned Regret, arguably one of the band's best singles ever.
Nothing here matches the beat-for-beat intensity of that gorgeous track, with new standout tunes Crystal and Primitive Notion falling far short.
Not even guests like former Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan on the sluggish Turn My Way, or Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie and guitarist Andrew Innes on the groove-laden but ultimately irritating Rock The Shack spice things up enough for my liking.
And songs like 60 m.p.h., Vicious Streak, Slow Jam, the instrumental Someone Like You, Close Range and Run Wild go nowhere real fast.
New Order, who performed on the West Coast leg of Moby's Area One tour -- their first shows in more than half a decade -- have scheduled some U.K. dates this fall, but so far there are no more North American shows.
