Just strangers singing a song
By JANE STEVENSON

Not much has been heard from wacky Irish lass Sinead O'Connor since she proclaimed herself a priest, then a lesbian, then pregnant, then dropping out of the gay-themed festival, Wotapalava, last summer.

But O'Connor does sing one song -- Harbour -- on Moby's new album 18, in stores this week.

Turns out the two hair-challenged artists have not even met.

"Strangely, it existed completely before she entered the picture," Moby recently told Sun music writer Kieran Grant.

"But when I knew she was maybe interested in singing on my record, I thought it was the song that would be most appropriate.

"She and I have never met. We spoke on the phone, but she was afraid to fly after Sept. 11 so I sent her the tapes and she recorded the vocals in London."

Also adding their voices to 18 are rising neo-soul star Angie Stone and rapper MC Lyte.

JOHN FOR MAYER: Buzzed-about folk-rock singer-songwriter John Mayer plays The Opera House on June 27 with tix, $15, on sale today at TicketMaster, Rotate This, Sonic Temple or by phone.

Mayer, who's been compared to Sting, Dave Matthews and Jakob Dylan, has a 2000 album out called Room For Squares.

MORNING HAS BROKEN: Toronto jazz-pop singer Molly Johnson's upcoming new album, Another Day, hits stores on June 11.

Molly, along with her band (Andrew Craig on piano, keyboards and vocals, Mark McLean on drums and percussion, Mike Downes on bass, and Colleen Allen on sax, flute, clarinet, accordion and vocals), has recorded 11 new songs, including Summertime and Ooh Child.

Acclaimed producer Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson, Holly Cole) was behind the boards while the legendary Kevin Killen (U2, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello) recorded and mixed the album in April at Reaction Studios in Toronto.

Johnson will tour Canada in June and play the JVC Jazz Festival on June 16 at Harbourfront's outdoor stage. The 3:30 p.m. concert is free.

SUM 41 GOES BETTER WITH PEPSI: Super-hot Ajax, Ont., punk-pop outfit SUM 41 will embark on 11 invite-only club shows across Canada in September as part of the Pepsi Taste Tour 2002, including a Sept. 14 stop at the Phoenix.

Tickets will be handed out via Pepsi Taste Challenges, radio station giveaways and at www.pepsi.ca.

ALIVE AT 25: Among the various celebrations in honour of Toronto classic rock radio station's Q-107 25th anniversary is next Wednesday's all-Canuck bash at The Docks.

Appearing on stage will be John Kay & Steppenwolf, April Wine, Teenage Head, Goddo, The Kings and The Carpet Frogs.

Win tickets to see the show by listening to Q-107.
