WINNIPEG - Boy band O-Town's biggest hit song is Liquid Dreams, but it might as well have been Liquid Screams at the Centennial Concert Hall last night.
A wall of high-pitched sound washed over the sellout crowd of 2,303 mostly female fans as the Orlando, Fla., based quintet arrived on stage encased in individual white fabric tubes. Stepping out of their sheathing, the boys began singing All My Love, a choice that, judging by the decibel level of the screams, thrilled the fans to the very core.
Some were well on the way to O-Town bliss before the concert even started.
Terri-Rae Solleveld, 16, arrived at the Centennial Concert Hall at 9 a.m., hoping to catch a glimpse of the band before showtime. She was awarded big-time, when she and half a dozen friends managed to snag backstage passes.
"Oh, it was great! I've never been so excited in my life. I'm so happy -- I've never felt like this in my whole life," Solleveld squealed as she emerged from the pre-show meeting.
Shivering uncontrollably in a tank top -- like most fans, she got soaked in an early evening cloudburst -- Solleveld said she was still wet and cold but had to wait until she dried off before she could put her grey sweatshirt back on. She didn't want to risk smudging the ink where each band member had signed his name.
The made-for-TV band -- Jacob Underwood, 21, Ashley Parker Angel, 21, Dan Miller, 20, Erik Estrada, 21, and Trevor Penick, 21 -- released their debut album earlier this year and have since toured extensively in the U.S. and Canada.
Chosen from thousands of applicants on the Popstars-like ABC-TV series Making the Band, which had its second-season finale last week, the quintet's dramatic trials and tribulations have been documented over 24 episodes for millions of young fans.
This season, Estrada dealt with the death of his grandmother and struggled with his tender emotions when his biological father decided they should meet. The group dumped their star-maker manager Lou Pearlman (Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync), and both Trevor and Ashley had girl trouble when their career responsibilities affected romantic relationships.
Last night's crowd was sympathetic, holding up signs reading Trevor You Are My Liquid Dream and Ashley and Shelli (his gal pal) Forever.
Following a hip-hoppy rendition of Girl, the fellas each took a private moment to introduce themselves to the audience and to bask in just-for-me screams -- the longest and loudest if which were reserved for California-blonde Ashley and cute-boy Estrada (no relation to the actor from CHiPS, as far as we know).
Gathering around a piano, they put the choreographed dance moves to rest for a few minutes to croon love ballad Baby I Would. Sensitive and Sexiest Woman in the world were also on the playlist, along with a few cover tunes -- hey, they only have one album -- but a 90-minute show left the girls, and a few boys, well satisfied.
