Concert Review: Oasis

Molson Amphitheatre, Toronto - May 22, 2001
Rain couldn't keep Oasis, Black Crowes and Spacehog fans away last night
By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun

TORONTO -- Rock fans are resilient if nothing else.

Or so it would appear last night as a healthy crowd of 12,000 braved a nasty torrential downpour to catch the Tour of Brotherly Love featuring the sibling acts Black Crowes, Oasis and Spacehog at the Molson Amphitheatre.

Just getting to the lakefront venue was an adventure in itself as window-high water turned Lakeshore Blvd. into a hard-to-navigate river in spots for some drivers.

And even when you found a parking space, there were still enormous puddles to contend with that left most concert-goers with wet feet in addition to their already soaking clothes and hair.

On a warm summer night that might be okay, but when you can still see your breath, it's one shivering proposition over the course of three musical acts and four hours.

Thankfully, the bands -- sadly, I missed Spacehog due to my aforementioned hydroplaning activity -- cranked it up enough so that the drenched crowd could at least move around and warm themselves.

The enthusiastic audience, which included movie star Harrison Ford, certainly got into it during Oasis' hour-and-15-minute set which featured frontman Liam Gallagher and his brother-guitarist Noel in fine form despite the latter's confession they'd had a few bevvies.

"We should probably have more to say for ourselves but we're kind of drunk," he said, before adding about the weather conditions: "It isn't fair to the people at the back. You crazy bastards!"

Given Toronto has always been solid Oasis territory, it might have made more sense for the Manchester group to close out the evening here rather than the Black Crowes, who concentrated on material from their latest album, Lions, and welcomed local guitarist Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar) on to the stage at one point.

Certainly Crowes frontman Chris Robinson -- decked out in braids and a toque bedecked with yellow flowers -- misjudged the audience when he berated them for wearing "too many Manchester United shirts. You've got the wrong f---kin' team man. You've got to wear some Dallas Cowboy shirts."

The response? A chorus of boos. Everyone knows Oasis support Manchester City.

As it was, the British rockers delivered one of the tightest sets I've ever seen them turn in, making them a tough act to follow.

Liam, decked out in sunglasses, a flowered shirt, jeans and runners, struck his usual mic-swallowing pose with his hands behind his back when he wasn't shaking a tambourine.

Noel, meanwhile, didn't shy away from solos and stood at the front of the stage and applauded the audience once the set had ended.

Oasis opened with Go Let It Out, from their last studio album Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, and closed with a spirited cover of The Beatles' I Am The Walrus.

In between, they offered up such older favourites as Morning Glory, Cigarettes & Alcohol -- which ended with a snippet of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love --Slide Away and Don't Look Back In Anger, along with the more recent tune Gas Panic!

But the highlight was Champagne Supernova, which drew out even the meekest of fans to take part in a soccer game-worthy singalong.

JAM! Rating: 3.5 out of 5
