OLP, Beatles big chart winners
By PAUL CANTIN

Expect to see a lot of copies of "Beatles 1" stuffing stockings on Christmas morning.

The Fab Four's singles collection remains atop SoundScan Canada's retail record chart, but the big news is the surging spike in sales as the Christmas season approaches. Since last week, sales have vaulted to 102,561 from the previous week's chart-topping total of 81,814.

The week of Nov. 19, when "Beatles 1" was unleashed on stores, the album sold 54,668 copies. Generally speaking, major album releases peak during their first week of release, but as is often the case during the Christmas season, The Beatles have reversed that trend, steadily selling more records week-after-week, leading up to Christmas.

To date, "Beatles 1" has sold over 354,000 copies in Canada.

Amid the gift-buying frenzy, Canada's Our Lady Peace battled into the top five with their new album, "Spiritual Machines." SoundScan Canada's data shows the new album sold 36,394 copies during its debut week, making it the highest-charting debut on the week's charts.

The Beatles' trend toward increased pre-Christmas sales extended throughout the top 10. The only act not to sell more records this week compared to last was Backstreet Boys and their #4 album "Black & Blue," which sold 56,196 this week, compared to over 60,000 the week before.

MuchMusic's "Big Shiny Tunes" and "Muchdance 2001" held onto second and third spot in the charts, selling respectively 83,469 (up from just under 80,000 last week) and 73,269 (up from 61,275). After Backstreet Boys and Our Lady Peace at #4 and #5, the compilation "Women & Songs 4" dropped one spot to sixth, on sales of 34,939 (compared to last week's 27,787).

Limp Bizkit's "Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water" dropped one to seven, on sales of 30,806 (up from last week's 26.337). Quebec singer Ginette Reno's "Un Grand Noel D'Amour" dropped from seventh to eighth, selling 24,519 (compared to 23,809).

Rounding out the Top 10, Lenny Kravitz's "Greatest Hits" moved down one spot to ninth, selling 23,780 (up from 21,443 last week), and Offspring's "Conspiracy Of One" dropped from #9 to #10, selling 21,953, a slight increase over last week's 20,075.
