Where is Stankonia and where do I buy a ticket to get there? According to U.S. hip-hop crew Outkast -- primarily MCs Andre 3000 and Big Boi -- it's "the place from which all funky things come." This hotly-anticipated tome is more like a bolt out of the glossy bore that is mainstream hip-hop. Skankonia's tracks bleed together into a technicolour comic book opera, all gloopy, spaced-out (P-)funk, live horns, pretend radio broadcasts, and pinballing rhymes. I'll Call Before I Come veers even closer to vintage funk, with its Parliament-style refrain.
But it's the sure-fire lyrical hooks of tunes such as Gasoline Dreams and the drum 'n' bass assault B.O.B. -- "Bombs Over Baghdad!" will be this winter's "Bling Bling!" -- that'll rock your personal stereo like a pocket revolution.
Otherworldly.
