RHYTHM & BLUES
By MIKE ROSS
RHYTHM & BLUES Robert Palmer (EMI) Just in time for the first Valentine's Day of the new millennium comes the return of everyone's favourite blue-eyed soulman - and he's still addicted to love. It's taken its toll. On a self-produced assortment of slick, overdone electronic soul in which Palmer alternately pretends to be Prince, James Brown and Marvin Gaye, he offers the following love advice. Take heed: "You can't choose who to fall in love with ... Work if you wanna improve it ... Keep on lovin' 'cause you'll never get enough," and my favourite, "You're not the only one who feels so funky." Thank you, Dr. Romance. Rhythm & Blues is hit & miss, just eccentric enough to be interesting and containing enough bright spots - the opening disco romp of True Love and a minimalist version of Lowell George's Twenty Million Things are two of the best - to make it worthwhile.
