Album Review: Parton, Dolly

LITTLE SPARROW
By FISH GRIWKOWSKY

LITTLE SPARROW
Dolly Parton
(Sugar Hill)

Damn it, my neck just went out for some reason as I began writing about this disc.

That must be a sign that I'm doing the wrong thing in praising it, but what can you do?

After all, how could a cover of Collective Soul's Shine be this good? But it is, with Parton's pretty little voice, as are the rest of the bluegrassy samples. Car chase music like Seven Brides Road flows into unlikely Cole Porter covers, all done with a tenderness that makes you miss the Jolene days, but not much.

The Geraldine Fibbers did the ultimate version of that song, after all.

This is the age of classic country stars being the only thing worth talking about, so get on board with this one.

It's great. I love In the Sweet By and By, and even the sentimental Marry Me. And Mountain Angel is incredible. Then again, I've had a crush on Dolly Parton since I was first bottle fed, go figure, so other motivations could easily be at work.
