PARIS HILTON

Artist: Pavement

Jicks nix hype
When you've been described as the voice of a generation, the father of the lo-fi movement and the Grace Kelly of indie rock, it must be hard to make a new album without feeling burdened by people's expectations. But Stephen Malkmus says he doesn't believe, or even read, the hype.

"I don't really pay attention," says the former Pavement frontman, who's currently on tour with his new band, the Jicks. "I'm aware that people write things, but I try to think about it as promotion, 'cause they wouldn't be writing about us if they weren't interested."

Not concrete
Former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus' self-titled debut solo album is ready for a Feb. 14 release, but it'll be a while before Toronto gets a live sample.

The former singer-guitarist for the U.S. underground rock gods, Malkmus was due to play his first solo gig at New York City's Bowery Ballroom last night. A maiden tour brings him to Vancouver March 8, but he likely won't play Toronto until the tour's second leg this summer.
