Album Review: PERNICE BROTHERS

THE WORLD WON'T END
By DARRYL STERDAN

THE WORLD WON'T END
Pernice Brothers
(Ashmont / Scratch)

It's easier to slag lousy albums than it is to praise worthy ones. Which makes finding the words to describe this sophomore CD by the Pernice Brothers a tall order. Sure, we can open the thesaurus and pull out adjectives like lush, jangly, tasteful and stylish to describe the Brian Wilson-influenced roots-pop sound of ex-Scud Mountain Boys and Chappaquiddick Skyline singer-guitarist Joe Pernice and his sextet (which includes his brother Bob); we can whip out the dictionary and tell you his lyrics are gorgeous and unpretentious, the melodies ebullient, the rhythms sprightly, the songcraft stellar and refined. And we can trot out the usual superlatives like magical, luminous, flawless, inspired, yadda yadda yadda. Truth is, sometimes you just gotta hear it for yourself. This is one of those times. (More on: The Pernice Brothers).
