Album Review: PERNICE BROTHERS

LIVE A LITTLE
Superb Little
By -- Winnipeg Sun

The Pernice Brothers
Live a Little
(Ashmont/Outside)

Joe Pernice was raised in Boston and got his start in alt-country. But on the sixth CD from his band The Pernice Brothers, the singer-guitarist continues to make it clear he's an old-fashioned Britpopster at heart.

Live a Little finds the dusty-voiced Pernice once again drawing from a lengthy roster of U.K. greats -- the wry edge of The Soft Boys, the literate lyricism of Elvis Costello, the romantic melancholy of Morrissey, the harmonies and melodies of Squeeze and, of course, the sophisticated, irresistible songcraft of The Beatles -- to fashion gorgeous pop gems like Somerville, Zero Refills and the Joe Strummer ode High as a Kite.

Highlighted by some crisply unfussy production and softened by a few lush, well-placed string arrangements, Live a Little proves that superb pop songcraft knows no boundaries.
