Concert Review: Perry, Katy

Molson Amphitheatre, Toronto - July 26, 2009
Katy Perry makes sweet music
By -- Sun Media

TORONTO - Katy Perry's fruit obsession continued on Sunday night at the Molson Amphitheatre as the proud Santa Barbara native made a grand entrance wearing a '20s bathing suit-inspired outfit and carrying an large inflatable strawberry on her back - one of several on her stage - and then whipped it out into the crowd while The Beach Boys' California Girls played in the background.

It was one of several fruits that decorated Perry's fun and colourful stage, along with a white picket fence, pink flamingos, a yellow cat, and a pink backdrop dominated by her name, a cut-out heart in lights and flowers.

The 24-year-old singer-songwriter, who has been touring non-stop since the release of her 2008 breakthrough album, One Of The Boys, including a March stop at Kool Haus, decided to wrap up her never-ending roadtrip with some larger shows before she makes her next album and proved she could handle the larger environs over the course of an hour-and-25-minute set.

"I can't believe you all came to see me!" said Perry, seemingly gobsmacked.

It's Perry's spirit and energy that stays with you long after the strains of her multiple hits - I Kissed A Girl, Ur So Gay, Hot N' Cold, Waking Up In Vegas - have faded into the background.

She's a talker, this one, and sometimes she's got a mouth of her too despite the presence of a cross on her acoustic guitar strap, perhaps a shout-out to her strict Christian upbringing.

But, for the most part, Perry was one funny, entertaining goofball, whether she was overemoting during a skit with a fake postman while performing a cover of Please Mr. Postman, or talking about her cat Kitty Purry, who was represented on stage by an large inflated cat head that was heard meowing loudly while dressed herself in a pink leopard-print cat suit that included a tail.

Backed by a four-man band all dressed in pink tuxedos, Perry alternated between playing acoustic and electric guitar although she was really best when freed from an instrument like when she encouraged a fan - "Jessica from Cambridge" - who was dressed up as a pink flamingo to come up on stage and dance during Hot N' Cold, one of the evening's best songs.

Then there was the long dramatic monologue that preceded the last song of the night, I Kissed A Girl, which saw Perry whipping out an oversized Cherry chapstick before kissing an audience member as she faceplanted into the audience by the song's end.

Perry does seem to be in constant motion most of the time and she had two risers on stage that allowed the audience of mostly female fans get a better look at her.

Still, she proved she could also handle quieter moments, like when she sang along on stage with just her acoustic guitar for the pretty ballad, Thinking Of You.
