Ex-Prince debuts new single on 'Net

The Artist Formerly Known As Prince has joined the small group of artists using the Internet to take their music directly to the fans.

The ex-Prince has made available his new single, a cover of the Stylistics hit, Betcha By Golly Wow!, in its entirety on his official web site, The Dawn. The song, available in both .wav and .au formats, went up on Wednesday (Nov. 6). That's almost a week before it goes to radio stations, and almost two weeks before the album from which it comes, the three-CD Emancipation, hits the streets.

The sultry ballad is one of four tracks on TAFKAP's site, one of which is a non-album cut. The others -- which appear only as excerpts -- include Slave, a "funky medley" of dance-oriented songs from the album, and Ripopgodazippa, the latter a non-album, reggae-flavored throwaway.

A pair of caveats: some of the file sizes are quite large, and the sound quality, at least in the .au format, leaves a great deal to be desired.
