Album Review: The Proclaimers

PERSEVERE
By MIKE ROSS

PERSEVERE
The Proclaimers
(Nettwerk)

"Sweet little girls cut a swath through this world using skills that they get from their mothers" seems a far cry from thank heaven for same - and that tells you a little of where this duo of aging Scottish twins is coming from on its latest CD.

Woes with women is just one, er, two of the identical chips on their identical shoulders. In one jingly, jangly, countrified tune after another (Jerry Jerry is right: mandolins are disturbing), they whine about snobbery, American culture, people who whine, and so on, dipping here and there into silly love songs and sentimental ballads.

These guys have a charm and originality that can't be denied. No one else in the world sounds like the Proclaimers - not that anyone would want to. (More on: The Proclaimers)
