Ottawa comedian Tom Green has fingered hometown pals Punchbuggy for help with the soundtrack of his upcoming film "Freddy Got Fingered."

Green, who stars in and directed the movie, has included Punchbuggy's song "Lucky Me, Lucky You" on a soundtrack that also includes songs by The Sex Pistols, Green Day, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Moby, and The New York Dolls.

Punchbuggy drummer Adam Luedicke, a longtime friend of Green's, told JAM! Music that the idea of Green using Punchbuggy's music in the film dates back to last Christmas, when the gonzo comedian was back in Ottawa with fiancee Drew Barrymore and hooked up with Luedicke.

"He just told me to send some CDs to his production office in New York," Luedicke said. "I had an inkling something might be used (in the movie), but it's an honour to be alongside so many great bands".

"Lucky Me, Lucky You" originally appeared on Punchbuggy's 1994 album "All-Nite Christian Rollerskate," although the band did some sonic retuning of the song for the soundtrack.

In the film, "Lucky Me" underscores a scene in which Green's character tries to pick up a woman in a hospital, Luedicke said, adding the band has been invited to the film's premiere next month in Hollywood.

The relationship between Punchbuggy and Green is a longstanding one. When Green's cable-access show first launched in Ottawa, Punchbuggy played their speedy, melodic pop for the studio audience between skits and appeared on the show several times.

Last year, when Punchbuggy got picked as finalists for an Internet battle-of-the-bands talent search, Green returned the favour and bolstered their fortunes by linking from his website to Punchbuggy's voting page. The group went on to win the contest.

"Although we kind of started our careers at the same level, his career has obviously taken off, and we never had any expectation that he would do anything for us," says Luedicke.

"It is not like a charity thing. We've always been there for each other. We're just good friends," says Luedicke. "He has obviously helped us out a tremendous amount, and he didn't have to do it."

As much as Green's gesture will give the band a leg-up, Luedicke said the group knows they'll have their work cut out for themselves to take advantage of the opportunity.

Punchbuggy has a finished album in the can and is about to start looking for a label deal. They also expect to play some Canadian dates in late April.
