Album Review: Bonnie Raitt

SILVER LINING
By JANE STEVENSON

SILVER LINING
Bonnie Raitt
(EMI)

Raitt's latest album, in stores Tuesday, was named after the gorgeous, melancholy song by British singer-songwriter David Gray, from his breakthrough collection White Ladder.

In the expert hands of Raitt -- a veteran scratchy-voiced blues singer and skilled slide guitarist -- it's the standout song on this release, co-produced by the respected team of Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake, who were also on board for her last album, 1998's Fundamental.

The other highlight is her continued exploration of African music, covering Zimbabwean artist Oliver Mtukudzi's Hear Me Lord and collaborating with Mali artist Habib Koite on Back Around.

She makes a bluesy start with Fool's Game, written by veteran New Orleans keyboardist Jon Cleary, the newest member of her seasoned touring band. But then Raitt falls into dull adult contemporary territory with tracks like I Can't Help You Now, Wherever You May Be, Valley Of Pain and Wounded Heart.

Fortunately, she comes back swinging with the funky blues of Time Of Our Lives, Cleary's earthy Monkey Business and her own No Gettin' Over You.

Raitt plays Massey Hall on April 13. (More on: Bonnie Raitt).
