Album Review: The Ramones

DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME
By MIKE ROSS

DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME
Joey Ramone
(EMI)

It was easy to take the Ramones for granted.

Through all the trends, the Britneys, Backstreets and Bizkits, the Ramones were always around to show us how to rock out in a simple way. It's more of the same on this collection of Joey Ramone's solo swan songs, recorded before his death last year. Honest impressions of himself, his illness and the world are steeped in dry humour and rendered in bare-bones rock 'n' roll. No more, no less. The album opens with a punked-out version of Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful World, delivered without a trace of novelty. There's the keen eye of innocence in these songs. There's no pontificating and no pretension. Just observations like "Everybody's screwed up in their own special way" in one singalong anthem after another.

At heaven's punk rock club, Joey Ramone is the headliner every night. The title says it all. (More on The Ramones).
