The Raveonettes
Pretty in Black
(Columbia/Sony BMG)

"Life moves on if you want it to," sing Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo of The Raveonettes. And move on they have.

On their nostalgia-laced sophomore set Pretty in Black, these sexy garage-pop Danes have dumped the distortion box that fueled the post-punk noise-rock of their 2003 disc Chain Gang of Love.

But if that's the bad news, here's the good: They've cranked up the reverb and tremolo to emphasize the classic '60s girl-group pop that completes their sound.

Of course, the unironic cover of The Angels' My Boyfriend's Back and guest vocals from Ronnie Spector make that hard to miss. Slightly more subtle (but no less wonderful) are the primal thumping of VU drummer Mo Tucker and the creepy sonics of Suicide's Martin Rev, who give the disc an edge of gritty menace The Angels never quite displayed.

Then there are the rootsy and bluesy cuts sprinkled here and there to add a dash of Royal Trux scuzz to the proceedings.

All in all, pretty cool.
