Rock Star Supernova
Rock Star Supernova
(Burnett-Epic/Sony BMG)
The best rock bands create a sound that is greater than the sum of their parts. Rock Star Supernova, not so much.
Despite their all-star pedigree -- you've got Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Guns N' Roses axeman Gilby Clarke and ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted supporting fauxhawked guyliner addict Lukas Rossi -- the self-titled debut album from these reality-show rock Idols is anything but stellar.
Clarke's uninspired post-grunge riffs, Lee's standard-issue arena-sized pounding, and Torontonian Rossi's generic modern-rock wailing congeal into dull and instantly forgettable tracks that prove once and for all that when you try to create music by reducing it to a formula, all you create is formulaic music.
And they remind you that truly great rock bands are born, not assembled from other bands' spare parts.
