Album Review: Rollins Band

NICE
By DARRYL STERDAN

NICE
Rollins Band
(Sanctuary / EMI)

For our money, Henry Rollins can never top his work with L.A. punk pioneers Black Flag. But damned if his revamped Rollins band isn't narrowing the gap. This second disc from the retooled outfit -- basically, Rollins fronting Angelino riff-rock trio Mother Superior -- kicks ass and takes names with the same ferocity as last year's Get Some Go Again. These hot-wired, guitar-fuelled injections of pedal-to-the-Detroit-metal pack enough heat that the musclebound Rollins seems all but forced to abandon his post-punk posturing and spoken-word self-indulgence to compete. Time and again he rises to the occasion, shouting the dark, literate lyrics of Hello, Your Number is One and Gone Inside the Zero with the raw fury of the old Henry channelling the old Iggy. Nice, indeed -- nice and rough. As it should be. (More on: Rollins Band).
