Concert Review: Diana Ross

Fallsview Casino, Niagara Falls - April 11, 2007
By JANE STEVENSON - Sun Media

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. -- I want to see inside Diana Ross' closet.

Seriously.

Ross set the glamour bar impossibly high on Wednesday night at FallsviewCasino Resort's Avalon Ballroom.as she went through four incredible costume changes in just one hour and 10 minutes

Each sequined gown and accompanying floor-length shawl or coat outdid the next one, making for one jaw-dropping, almost regal, entrance after the next.

The fashion show alone was almost worth the price of admission, but Ross' entertaining skills and warm voice matched her suitably slinky gowns as she cheerfully led the sold-out crowd through a nicely paced show with highlights from her five-decade career.

Interestingly not in the mix was a single tune from her sub-par 2007 record of love songs, I Love You.

Let's just say they were not missed.

First up, costume-wise, as the 63-year-old Ross sang off stage, I'm Coming Out -- apparently she does have a sense of humour -- was a tangerine number with a matching chiffon floor length shawl.

Ross clearly realized her inner-diva early on and never does anything small.

Thus, she had big hair to match her big outfits.

It was so big Ross often had to carefully move it out of her still gorgeous face.

Meanwhile, her skilled seven-piece band happily played away whenever she left the stage to change into a new gown.

The costume that packed the biggest punch was a Big-Bird like ensemble of yellow feathered coat and yellow sequined gown but, honestly, only Ross could have pulled it off.

Song-wise, Supremes hits from the '60s figured early on in her set like My World is Empty Without You, Babe, Where Did Our Love Go?, Baby Love and Stop In the Name Of Love.

But they were eclipsed -- other than the dramatic and ecstatic Love Child later in the show, which was the undisputed highlight of the night -- by Ross' own '70s and '80s solo hits like Touch Me In the Morning, Love Hangover, Upside Down, Ease On Down the Road, Do You Know Where You're Going To?, and Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

Still, given all her chart-toppers, you've got to wonder why Ross would choose to close the night with Gloria Gaynor's signature tune, I Will Survive, other than to make a statement about her own survivor skills, which seem to include sincerity these days.

Ross recently appeared as a celebrity judge and performed on American Idol and there has been renewed interest in the Supremes after the success of the film, Dreamgirls.

"If you need me, call me," Ross said as she finally slinked off the stage.

And it actually sounded like she really meant it.
