Sexsmith, Kerr a good pairing

Sexsmith & Kerr
Destination Unknown
(Ronboy Rhymes/Warner)

Ron Sexsmith and Don Kerr are hardly unknown to each other. In fact, they've been working together on and off for nearly two decades, with Kerr serving as the pop songwriter's main utility player, handling everything from drums and harmony vocals to cello and ukulele.

On Destination Unknown, their first official outing as a musical duo, romantic troubadour Sexmith once again supplies all the songs. But the recording process and production clearly seem like a more collaborative effort, as Kerr fleshes out Sexsmith's acoustic guitar demos with his usual tasteful accompaniment and shares the vocal mic on each of these 13 cuts.

At times, the laid-back, soothing results remind you of the Everlys or Louvins -- if they were folksier, wrote better tunes and actually got along. Mostly, though, it reminds you of a particularly mellow Ron Sexsmith album with a lot more duets.

That may not exactly be the unknown territory of the title, but it's an enjoyable little sonic sidetrip nonetheless.
