Dreams of Africa persist, but Paul Simon proves he still has lots to say on this minimalist masterpiece. His first studio album in a decade is a collection of thought-provoking poetry on life, love, death and spirituality, delivered with gentle wit and set to the happy strains of one exotic rhythm after another.
A squad of percussionists, bamboo flautists, dulcimer players and Steve Gadd spin a distinctly African vibe throughout. The result is an elegant sound that manages to say much more with much less.
Some of the writing here is so simple and clear it could be children's music. The wise guru of pop uses a wrongful murder conviction (pick one) to sum up "human" behaviour in Pigs, Sheep and Wolves. He contemplates the passage of time in Old: "God is old/we're not old," he points out. Love is examined in songs like Darling Lorraine, a touching and disquieting tale of a decaying relationship. Even Christianity gets a shot in The Teacher.
The bridge over troubled water long since crossed - or burned - Garfunkel's former partner is on top of his game.
