Simple Plan has a simple plan for Canada's traditional Hockey Theme.
CTV and TSN announced yesterday that the Montreal band Simple Plan will be the first in a series of Canadian musical acts to record a version of the Hockey Theme.
Simple Plan was scheduled to be in the studio yesterday. Simple Plan's rendition will debut on TSN next Wednesday.
The Hockey Theme, of course, is the old Hockey Night in Canada theme.
CBC lost the rights to the old theme earlier this year, when it could not come to a contractual agreement for its continued use. CTV then swooped in and bought the rights, with rumours placing the price tag in the neighbourhood of $2 million.
At those prices, obviously CTV-TSN can't be thrilled with the amount of media attention CBC's public contest to determine the new Hockey Night in Canada theme has been getting. Thus, the battle of the hockey songs has entered a new phase.
"This is very cool and a huge honour for a bunch of die-hard hockey fans," said Chuck Comeau, Simple Plan's drummer, in a statement. "This song was a huge part of our childhood and we are all stoked to have the chance to put our own Simple Plan twist on it."
