The title of the Tiger Beat queen's new CD may answer the question, 'Who is Ashlee Simpson?' but the same can hardly be said for this album's corresponding generic poptones. Sometimes she's a rocker that has been spending a lot of time with Franz Ferdinand's catalogue; sometimes she's a retro-'80s synth-pop artist attempting to create the next True.

She likely comes closest to being herself on the lightweight but naggingly catchy L.O.V.E. At such moments, Simpson sheds her efforts to be anything but a pop star. Which, after all, is what she is destined to remain ... for a little while longer.

It's all pretty harmless, and the possibly-prophetic Catch Me When I Fall is about as good an angsty ballad as one could ask for. Just ask Tiger Beat readers.
