The rebirth of the Daisy Dukes
Jessica simpson may spark a summer trend
By MIKE ENGEL - Calgary Sun

Finally there might be a return to the shortest of shorts, those close-to-cheek-bearing Daisy Dukes.

Whether you loved them or hated them, the chances of their return to mainstream fashion this summer is better than it's ever been since the decline of those exasperating '80s.

Simone Skaff, buyer for the Formans Fashion Group in Calgary, says the possibility of their return is in part surged by the film remake of The Dukes of Hazzard and Jessica Simpson sporting those sexified short shorts.

"Right now, every length of shorts is appropriate in the fashion world, but I would be surprised at this point if they come back in a huge way like they did in the '80s, partly because everything today is seamed and not much is frayed," she says.

"But everything does seem to come back and, believe it or not, lots of women that were born after the Baby-Boomer generation are still wearing them.

"And with the release of The Dukes of Hazzard, they will likely make another mark."

She says with Simpson playing the part of Daisy Duke in the August release, younger audiences may be the ones to turn the frayed fashion into a revitalized hit.

"Jessica is a little younger than the old Daisy Duke, and so is her following," Skaff says, referring to Catherine Bach, who originated the role for the TV series.

"But that could work for her and I do think the movie and Simpson will at least help bring back the fashion into mainstream."

And it's Simpson who Lindsay Perraton, fashion designer and owner of the Revive 45 fashion line and company, says will really help spark the Daisy Dukes trend.

"She would be the main reason behind the trend really taking off because anytime someone famous looks really good in something, the chances of the piece catching on becomes much, much better," Perraton says.

Despite that, actual frayed and jean Daisy Dukes have yet to make a major mark throughout the city.

Plenty of short shorts are out there, but Daisy Dukes, in the strictest sense, are not.

"I think part of the problem why it's hard to find them in Calgary right now is because whenever fashion comes from a movie, it usually doesn't hit the streets until months or even a year after the release," says Perraton.

"Once they see the movie, then it will start to catch on, but here in Calgary, that may not be until next year because fall and winter quickly follows the August release of The Dukes of Hazzard."

But if you want to be on top of the fashion world -- or a year ahead of the game -- and squeeze into a pair of Dukes, you can always check Revive 45's one of a kind pieces at www.revive45.moonfruit.com.

FILM FASHION

Over the years, films have always helped set fashion trends. Here are just some of the more notable ones:

GIDGET (1959): Not only did this cheesy movie -- starring Sandra Dee -- introduce surf culture and attitudes to the world, but it also helped popularize the bikini and beach-bum styles for all to follow.

GREASE (1978): This classic musical starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John put the prep on hold and launched the leather-wearing greaser into a fashionable hipster -- albeit only briefly.

FLASHDANCE (1983): Although you probably want to forget the movie and the fashion it inspired, this '80s semi-classic brought shoulder-bearing sweatshirts and leg warmers out of the gym and into the mainstream.

SINGLES (1992): Bringing flannel, army boots and torn jeans from grunge shows to the big screen, this hit starring Matt Dillon, helped bring the fashion sense of Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder and the rest of the Seattle scene into the suburbs and beyond.
