Sleater-Kinney
The Woods
(Sub Pop/Warner)
If they're not careful, one of these days Sleater-Kinney might just stumble into a bona fide hit. The female trio has been struggling with the accessibility issue for a full decade now, and The Woods once again offers two sides of an evening for Sleater-Kinney fans.
Jumpers, for instance, is a stupidly catchy pop song, as is the charming and funny Modern Girl.
But fear not, Sleater-Kinney fans, those tracks are well hidden and follow a series of songs marked by singer Carrie Brownstein's trademark caterwauling and impossible-to-dance-to beats courtesy of drummer Janet Weiss. The most unlistenable track, in fact, opens the album. Think of it as an initiation rite.
For those who dare to go further into the riot-grrl world of Sleater-Kinney, many treats await. Even if some work is required on the listener's part to fully appreciate them.
