Sloan
A Sides Win: Singles 1992-2005
(Sony/BMG)
Sloan's position as the band that spearheaded a lively Halifax scene and forced the mainstream to acknowledge the existence of great indie music, is secure. And as one sits through these 16 well-crafted tracks (including two worthy new songs), it's hard to find fault with a band whose supreme sense of melody has rarely let it down.
Perhaps none of it should have worked, but it's hard to argue with gems like The Good in Everyone, Money City Maniacs and Coax Me.
Or with the fact that thanks to Sloan, the opening words of the unforgettable debut single Underwhelmed -- "She was underwhelmed if that's a word/ I know it's not ..." -- are no longer valid.
The English language may have suffered due to Sloan, but that's what rock 'n' roll is all about.
That, and catchy tunes.
