Album Review: WILL SMITH

WILLENNIUM
By DAVE VEITCH

WILLENNIUM
Will Smith
(Columbia/Sony)

"Any time I shoot, I score/So many awards, I could start a Grammy chess board," Smith gloats on his new CD.

Certainly, he displays no false modesty here. Time and time again, he reminds us he's conquered the music industry (referring to himself as "the hip-hop Moses" on I'm Comin') and Hollywood ("My last cheque for Wild Wild West came on a flatbed"). Yet Smith backs up his boasts with some of the catchiest G-rated rap since, well, his last album, Big Willie Style.

Smith's secret: Giving most of the people what they want most of the time -- i.e., funky backing tracks lifted from familiar hits (The Clash's Rock The Casbah, Diana Ross' Love Hangover, Stevie Wonder's I Wish, LTD's Back In Love Again), topped off by Smith's fluid rapping and anti-gangsta stance.

Only the most hardcore rap fans won't be able to get jiggy wit it.
