RAIN ON LENS
By FISH GRIWKOWSKY
RAIN ON LENS Smog (Drag City) A very different trip than Merle Haggard's, this quick follow-up to Dongs of Sevotion is punchier, off the bat, than that awesome record. "I'm a bit like a soldier in the way that I wear no uniform and choose not to fight, and fight all night for some other cause," Bill Callahan sings in his weird, monotone voice. Lots of saucy lyrics throughout, robotic guitar and pounding drum, at least when he hasn't slowed down to a whisper. Generally, though, it seems Callahan has rediscovered rock and roll a bit, very likely to be popular with the kids. Keep Some Steady Friends Around continues Smog's exploration of simple things, like hanging out at your neighbour's smoking hash on the porch, a good backdrop for this record. Everything Smog does is good, what did you expect? Callahan's method of slow rising is predictable but ever effective, yes, come listen. Here's your new favourite. Track Listing
