Album Review: Ringo Starr

RINGO RAMA
By DARRYL STERDAN

RINGO RAMA
Ringo Starr
(Koch)

Say what you will about Ringo, he knows how to have a good time.

This 12th proper studio release from the most fun-loving Fab is an expectedly loose and laid-back affair with all the typical amenities.

There are the light-weight, light-hearted, pun-filled pop-rock throwaways like Missouri Loves Company, Instant Amnesia and I Think Therefore I Rock N Roll. There's the heavyweight guest list of old drinking buddies like David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Van Dyke Parks and (via sampling) Roy Orbison, along with newer, casual acquaintances like Shawn Colvin, Willie Nelson and even jazz bassist Charlie Haden, all of whom let their hair down and cut loose on these open-ended, jam-filled tracks.

And of course, there's the host with the mostest, Ringo himself, holding court on his drum stool, laying down his rock-solid behind-the-beat grooves and unapologetically braying in his instantly recognizable Liverpudlian tones about love and the Queen and English gardens, making it all seem as simple as falling off a wagon.

Who says it don't come easy? (More on Ringo Starr)
