Rod Stewart shines on Cdn. charts
By

Canadians have taken a shining to Rod Stewart's latest album of golden oldies.

The British singer's newly released "Stardust... The Great American Songbook: Volume III" entered the Canadian album charts at No. 1 on sales of 20,800, according to data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan.

"Stardust" edged out Celine Dion's "Miracle" (20,400), which fell to No. 2 after debuting at No. 1 last week.

Stewart's first collection of classic tunes, "It Had To Be You: The Great American Songbook," entered the charts at No. 10 in October 2002, while the sequel, "As Time Goes By...The Great American Songbook: Volume II," checked in at No. 2 last October.

Stewart also grabbed the No. 1 spot south of the border, selling more than 240,000 copies of "Stardust" in the U.S., according to Reuters. It marks the first time he has topped the U.S. album charts in more than 25 years -- his classic album "Blondes Have More Fun" hit the No. 1 spot back in 1978.

Elsewhere in the Canadian top 10, Sum 41's fourth album "Chuck" (11,400) slipped to third, Hilary Duff's self-titled effort landed in fourth, and Usher's "Confessions" occupied the fifth position.

Green Day's "American Idiot" grabbed the No. 6 spot, while Jimmy Eat World nailed down their highest debut so far, landing at No. 6 with "Futures."

Maroon 5's "Songs About Jane" fell one to No. 7, Ray Charles' "Genius Loves Company," bolstered by the upcoming biopic "Ray," re-entered the top 10 at No. 9, and Good Charlotte spent their third week at No. 10 with "The Chronicles of Life and Death."

Other notable debuts included Mos Def's "The New Danger" at No. 12, John Mellencamp's "Words & Music: Greatest Hits" at No. 15, Maroon 5's acoustic effort "1.22.03" at No. 26, Elliott Smith's posthumous "From the Basement on the Hill" at No. 33, Robbie Williams' "Greatest Hits" at No. 34, the "Ray" film soundtrack at No. 45, and Brooks & Dunn's "The Greatest Hits Collection Vol. 2" at No. 46.

In the U.S., Nelly's "Suit" claimed the second spot, followed by George Strait's "50 Number Ones" in third, Usher in fourth, and Ray Charles in fifth.
