Album Review: Suede

A NEW MORNING
By MIKE BELL

A NEW MORNING
Suede
(Sony)

This band once ruled Britain?

I guess technically it wasn't this band -- the current lineup is still missing guitarist-songwriter Bernard Butler, who helped propel Suede to the top of the charts in the early '90s -- but you get the drift.

Completely oblivious to the fact that his time has long since past, vocalist Brett Anderson soldiers on with Suede, making music that can't even be considered a shadow of what made it memorable to many (though, to be honest, I'd have to admit to not being one).

Gone are most of the theatrics.

Gone, too, is the powerful whine in Anderson's voice, and all that's left are quite silly faux clever lyrics and debatable melodies.

There's nothing wrong with progressing, just as long as there's a clear vision of what it is, because as every good leader knows, it's hard to rule when the platform you're standing on is far from solid. (More on Suede)
