SUICIDE MACHINES
By MIKE ROSS

SUICIDE MACHINES
Self-titled
(Hollywood Records)

Such a happy band for such a depressing name.

I Hate Everything is not typical of the themes on this band's third album: "I hate it all/I hate my friends/I hate this song/I hate this bad attitude/I'm sure you hate me too."

In other words, we're a bunch of insecure punks who use irony like it's going out of style - now will you please buy our record?

Short and sweet 'n' sour, these songs tend to be giddy expressions of fleeting mood swings - a more or less equal balance of self-loathing and happy, shiny feelings. In contrast to I Hate Everything, Perfect Day is all about loving. Bowing to their ska-punk roots, the band tarts up I Never Promised You a Rose Garden and gets really angry in socially critical songs like Reasons. So far, so good, if you're staying true to the modern punk rock formula.

In the epitome of self-referencing irony, Too Many Words uses too many words to skewer those who use too many words - ending with, "we gotta find some new ideas to express the way we feel."

 Heal thyself, musician.
