Sum 41
Go Chuck Yourself
(Aquarius)
Yesterday's rebel is today's conformist. Case in point: Go Chuck Yourself, the predictable live album from Sum 41.
Sure, these guys like to come off as snot-punks -- but they sure play it safe on this 66-minute set taped last year in London, Ont. You get the set list dominated by newer material like Hell Song, My Direction and No Reason -- along with a couple of earlier tunes like Fat Lip and the metallic Grab the Devil for the "old-school" fans.
You get the usual audience-participation bits, expletive-laced 'Hello Cleveland' between-song banter and mid-set exhortation that "we're just getting started." And thanks to their tour-honed chops, you get sterile, too-perfect performances completely lacking in spontaneity or rough edges.
If you were at one of these shows, Go Chuck Yourself might be a fine tour souvenir. If not, it's pretty Chucking dull.
