THE EVIL POWERS OF ROCK 'N' ROLL
The Supersuckers
(Aces & Eights / Koch)
Rock 'n' roll-abilly rebels such as the Supersuckers have their work cut out for them when they stray so far into Axl Rose's garden.
Featuring the return of lead singer Eddie Spaghetti, this band of sometime Steve Earle-collaborating punk cowboys seems to have an ear for ancient Alice Cooper more than anything else with this effort, all but abandoning some of the interesting directions they've taken in the last few years. Ah, but who am I kidding? This is an album about as many of the seven deadly sins as they could pack in, maybe inventing a few more, and there's no shortage of frat-boy drinking, sex and drug references, plus a fight song or two.
The effort begins to wear thin by the end. OK, we know you guys like to party, but what else? I don't think I'm missing the point here, either. There just isn't one.
All that conservative bunk aside, this is a great house-wrecker soundtrack.
Broken beer bottles are mandatory at this point, and some guy had better be in the backyard trying to wrestle a bone away from the Doberman while his girlfriend necks with his best friend under the stairs. Song titles like I Want the Drugs, My Kickass Life and Dead Meat illustrate the scene. Cool Manchu is a dumb but lovable rocker, and Stuff 'n' Nonsense is about as deep as it gets. It's all a big mix of western wear, Guns N' Roses and wrestling.
It is what it is, but it could have been a lot more.
