TURNING BLUE
By MIKE ROSS

TURNING BLUE
The Swallows
(Six Shooter Records)

Greg Keelor had his try at a solo album, so did Jim Cuddy.

Now from an unexpected corner of Blue Rodeo - drummer Glenn Milchem - comes a challenging, experimental tour de force in rock music. Released in 1999 and now getting national distribution for the first time, Turning Blue ranges from low-fi heartbreak songs (Exist) to all-out raging noise rock (Example). With shades of Beck and Blue Rodeo (naturally), it's intelligent, engaging music. Guests like Change of Heart's Ian Blurton and cellist Anne Bourne add some perfect touches.

Fans know that Blue Rodeo has depth, but Milchem - who wrote, produced, sang and played most of the parts here - proves himself a formidable talent in his own right. Never underestimate the drummer.
