Album Review: Thursday

A CITY BY THE LIGHT DIVIDED
Light shines
By -- Winnipeg Sun

Thursday
A City by the Light Divided
(Island/Universal)

Thursday are like a band reborn. You can take that metaphorically -- supposedly, these New Jersey screamo heroes came close to splitting after their last album. And you can take it musically, judging by their fourth full-length A City by the Light Divided.

Look no further than their choice of producer: Dave Fridmann, whose adventurous services are usually utilized by the likes of Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev.

As you might expect, he leads Thursday down some sonic detours, making his influence apparent in noisy textures, expansive sonic environments and an organ-driven instrumental. Wisely, Fridmann stops short of messing with the surging guitars, yearning vocals and top-flight songcraft that are the band's strengths.

The result: A disc that pushes them forward without cutting their ties with the past or dividing them from their fans.
