Justin Timberlake
FutureSex/LoveSounds
(Zomba/Sony BMG)
If we recall correctly, when we last heard from Justin Timberlake -- on his 2002 solo debut Justified -- he wanted to be Jacko. The good news is he's all over that silliness.
The bad news is that now, on his long-awaited followup FutureSex/LoveSounds, he wants to be Prince.
Now, we'll grant you that is a vast improvement. And thanks again to the help of superstar producer Timbaland, these tracks do a near-perfect job of replicating the sparsely sleazy sexaholic grooves of his Purpleness, right down to the slow-grinding robotic beatboxes, funky rubber-band basslines, cheesey keyboards and handclaps.
But seductive as SexyBack, Sexy Ladies, FutureSex/LoveSounds (are you sensing a theme here?) and LoveStoned may be musically, the mood is blown once JT enters the picture.
Basically, it's impossible not to roll your eyes and laugh when you hear the 25-year-old boy band alum whispering huskily in your ear, moaning in his vanilla falsetto or trying to front like a pimp when he talks about how he wants to give you his tongue and put you out of control. (Even more ludicrous: Timberlake trying to portray a crackhead in Losing My Way.)
With all due respect, could somebody please tell JT that just because Prince doesn't make CDs like this anymore, it doesn't give him the right to steal his whole act? And while you're at it, could you also remind him that he's a skinny-ass white boy from the Mickey Mouse Club?
Because at this rate, he's gonna decide he's R. Kelly next. And nobody needs that.
