Some bands find their musical niche early on and keep at it until they burn out or die of boredom. Others prefer to change styles, add elements, and generally skewer their fans' expectations.
Trans Am is definitely in the latter camp. The Washington, D.C., trio was once an instrumental rock band, with the impeccable hipster credentials of Tortoise's John McEntire (who engineered their first two albums) and Thrill Jockey Records behind them. But other, seemingly incompatible, influences -- such as Kraftwerk, Atari computer games, vocoder vocals, even humour -- have steadily crept into their mix.
