THE MAN WHO
Travis
(Sony)

On their 1997 debut, Good Feeling, Scotland's Travis were big on Oasis-sized anthems even though they had nothing more profound to convey than "all I want to do is rock." They did, however, have a singer in Fran Healy who sounded like Radiohead's Thom Yorke minus the neuroses, so at least they held some potential. Still, surely no one could have guessed Travis were capable of this, a wistful, understated, quietly powerful second album containing songs -- some jangly and pastoral, others dreamy and motionless, all beautifully melancholy -- that grow more remarkable and moving with each successive listen.
