TWENTY FOUR SEVEN
Tina Turner
(Virgin)
Those long legs, that gruff voice ... must mean Tina Turner's back on the prowl.
And those hummable R&B songs and good ol' fashioned rock and soul? Well, there's only a taste of that on her latest offering, Twenty Four Seven, which hits stores Tuesday, the day Turner celebrates her sweet 60th.
Even after decades of struttin' her stuff, Turner's distinct vocal prowess shows no signs of aging on her first new album since 1996's Wildest Dreams.
Yet with years of relying on outside material, the pickings have become slimmer in the writing field.
Pen pals Graham Lyle and Terry Britten, both responsible for some of Turner's biggest hits since the Private Dancer days, split writing duties with other relative unknowns (Lyle chimes in with the gospel-flavoured Talk To My Heart, while Britten co-writes the upbeat title track and disco-tinged Absolutely Nothing's Changed).
But neither Britten, Lyle, nor the Bee Gees can overcome the flat, AOR feel of the disc, as if Turner's been given a mandate: Play dat funky office-friendly music, Tina!
That amounts to plenty of radio play for When The Heartache is Over, the first single produced by the U.K. team Metro, that same formulaic team that gave you Cher's Believe (fortunately, Turner's been spared of the synth-vocalizing).
Mind you, the Tina of hit songs past is resuscitated on Without You, courtesy of a former Turner singing mate -- Bryan It's Only Love Adams.
There's a subtle hint that Turner's ready to call it a day (her forthcoming tour is said to be her last). If so, then it sounds like she's going out with a whimper instead of a bang.
And what's love got to do with that?
