Concert Review: Tina Turner

Saddledome, Calgary - Nov. 25, 2000
Tina Turner still turning heads
By MIKE BELL -- Calgary Sun

Tina Turner -- to quote the bearded prophets ZZ Top -- has got legs and knows how to use them.

But last night, in front of a soldout Saddledome crowd, the sexy soul sister also showed that she has so much more in her bag of tricks.

The voice, the charisma and the showmanship of the woman born Anna Mae Bullock were on display for everyone to see in a lengthy and spectacular Vegas-style musical revue.

On a stage set that looked as if it were designed by H.R. Geiger's more reserved brother, and flanked by three lithe jiggly dancers and two backup singers, Turner kicked off her show.

She promised she would take the audience on a journey through her 40-year career and she started with the Sly Stone number I Want To Take You Higher.

From there, up is exactly where things went.

Though she's turing 61 today, Turner fire-balled through the huge hits of her fabled career, right up to her latest album Twenty Four Seven.

Fool In Love, River Deep Mountain High, Private Dancer, What's Love Got To Do With It, Acid Queen (From the Who's rock opera Tommy) -- the classics kept on rolling. And tirelessly too.

Turner, clad in a black skin-tight leather half jumpsuit, worked the room and the garish stage masterfully.

She dwarfed everything around her including the tight seven-piece, which provided the never-ending supply of musical memories, and even the three jumbo screens that transmitted visuals of Turner's past.

If this is, as she as promised in numerous interviews, the singer's final hurrah, then the show last night should -- like her cool and sensual voice -- echo far enough into the future to make everyone forgive.

The hour-long set from opener Joe Cocker was in an odd way, reminiscent of two nights previous on the same Saddledome stage. There in the centre, stood the Woodstock legend delivering his hits like a slower, and greyer Gord Downie, except without the cryptic communiques from the underworld.

Backed by five musicians and two energetic, often distracting female vocal accompanists, Cocker's show was pure Princess Cruise Lines.

But it was the perfect backdrop for Cocker's rough but loveable voice.

Though it has had some of its more appealing edges sanded away by his 66 years, last night the Mad Dog proved there's still a lot of power in those pipes.

From the Leonard Cohen classic First We Take Manhattan, which is featured on Cocker's latest CD No Ordinary World, to his rather moving rendition of You Are So Beautiful and the ultra-sexy Leave Your Hat On. The veteran vocalist belted it out like a man who ain't done howling yet.
